Celebrate China

 

 Elementary:    “Celebrate China    grades 3 - 6   Celebrate the geography of China, experience the Lunar New Year, and get ready for the 2008 Summer Olympics to be held in Beijing.  Students will learn the basic Chinese greetings and courtesies.  They will also identify common words, as well as culturally appropriate customs and behaviors. This 3 part series includes lesson plans aligned to national standards in the areas of Language Arts, Math, Science and Social Students; specifically designed cultural kit accompanies each program, and lined online teacher resources.  Pre-program videoconference with the teachers is recommended.                                         Here are the three lessons included in this package:

  1. Part I “Welcome to China - Students will learn basic Chinese greetings and courtesies; using maps students will explore the diversity of the country and the misconceptions about a culture different from our own.  Students will greet one another in Chinese and write simple characters.·         
  2. Part II “Lunar New Year “The Chinese New Year is the most colorful and important of China’s Festivals.  The New Year may occur as early as January 21, and as late as February 21. Students will identify the importance of celebrating the New Year. They will also understand traditions and rituals, including paper cutting, special decorations, food, and activities.  The Lantern Festival concludes the New Year celebration.  Students will learn the traditional meaning of lanterns in Chinese culture. ·         
  3. Part III “2008 Summer Olympics” Beijing is the site of the 2008 Summer Olympics, with the theme, “One World, One Dream”.  Students will learn the symbolic meaning of the five mascots and gain an understanding of the importance to china of hosting the summer Olympics.  They will experience a picture tour of Beijing, visiting both ancient and modern landmarks in the city.

April 1 & 2 , 2008 Empire State Videoconference Collaborative

The New York State Distance Learning Consortim is proud to present a Videoconference Collaborative Project connecting schools throughout NewYork State.  Partipants will be guided  through videoconference experiences by experts around the country.

This is the second in a series of Collaboratives.  This two day workshop will help you become familiar with the use of videoconferencing technology.  You will experience different distance learning activities to enhance your currinulum.  You will start to develop and prepare to implement collaborative projects using distance learning.
